The era of the armed forces and the Nazis

Since 1929, the German army – especially the artillerymen – were interested in long range rockets, perceived as a way of getting round the prohibitions in the Treaty of Versailles.

The armed forces took advantage of the problems of rocket enthusiast societies to co-opt their most skilled members; von Braun was recruited in 1932.

The arrival of the Nazis in power, in 1933, resulted in secret research being undertaken into rockets. In addition, funds for the development of new weapons increased sharply.
