The underground installations in Mimoyecques

Exploded view of the underground gun site of Mimoyecques taken by the British Services (1944).

Situated a few kilometres from Calais, these installations (galleries and sloping shafts protected by concrete slabs) were designed to take guns of a new design, with very long barrels, placed in the earth.

In fact the construction of the launch site was begun before the system had been tested, and it was a complete failure.

In May 1945, the tunnels of Mimoyecques were very seriously destroyed by British army engineers, in order to prevent their being used again.

A railway gallery, which escaped being flooded in the water table, can still be visited.
